Fall One Room Challenge: Week 5!

November 1 by Andy Leave a Comment

Hi guys! Welcome to week 5 of the One Room Challenge! If you haven’t heard, the Challenge was extended by one week and THANK GOODNESS because I am soooo behind. We have our painters working on our giveaway house and they were supposed to be here yesterday, but that did NOT happen. We did get it all primed ourselves, so that’s good :)

The last little bit we have been putting the details on our ikea cabinets so that they don’t look so Ikea anymore….

It’s fun to see what a little hardware and pretend cabinet feet feel like! We had the chandelier like our one from the last One Room Challenge here but I’m really thinking I want two pendant lights instead. Luckily we wired for that when we renovated!

We also got our floors finished, we did an engineered wood that is honestly too dark for what I wanted, but until we have time and energy to do what we did in the bathroom…this will have to do. Want to see what I’m talking about? I have gratuitous #ihavethisthingwithfloors pics below.

We use 1×3 pine from Lowes or Home Depot and cut it into 2′ pieces and then make a square mark on the floor and start nailing!

This gives a reference for size.

You just stagger the joints to make a zig zag pattern. We never worry about how perfect it is because it is so inexpensive and may or may not end up being permanent.

When it’s all laid it looks INCREDIBLE. People are shocked to find out it costs about $1.50/sq.ft. It’s definitely time intense, though. Worth it? YES!

Then we stain it with Jacobean from Minwax. That’s what we were trying to match the engineered to and failed. Haha!!

So this is where we are. Slightly too dark of floors, a single chandelier that will soon be two pendants and cabinets that are about to get painted!! I can’t wait to reveal the color next week. Also…..

We take a small break to show you the cutest little lady taking a bath in the bathroom where the floors are …. :)

The room next to the living room is this great green sage color and now has this chandelier:

Kind of modern, which we love, so we are thinking of going modern in the other rooms as well.

iPhone view from living to dining :)

Okay! Blank canvas! Ready to paint and wallpaper. I’m really struggling with the piano. It’s super special to me because it was my great grandma’s and we don’t have a lot of places for the piano in this house. I feel like it needs to stay here but I want to do something awesome over it so it doesn’t seem out of place. Maybe a large piece of art!

I have been having so much fun watching everyone’s transformation!! Make sure you check them out!

I ❤️LOVE❤️ change. I think that’s why I love renovating so much. This kitchen angle in interesting to me...I actually like the white better in the photo, but the color in real life! AND here’s the best part: I’m about to change it again!! 😂😂😂 So...which is your favorite and what’s your vote for the next color?! #serialdecorator ... See MoreSee Less

One of the funniest comments we’ve ever received is that Kit’s room is “setting unrealistic expectations for any future houses she lives in” 😂😂😂 ... See MoreSee Less

Old Home Love

I just finished a REAL LIFE house tour on stories! 🙈🙈🙈 This year for Mother’s Day I decided to do something for MYSELF...I’m taking control of my surroundings and organizing my home, taking better care of my body and paying attention to my mental health. For me it all starts with the home. If I feel good in a space, I can do anything! Maybe that’s why I love doing houses so much?! 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ Enjoy! I can’t wait to share my “journey” (cringe) of getting everything a little more under control! 🙌🙌 ... See MoreSee Less

  • DIY Tip: Replicating Historic Molding

Having historic molding recreated can be expensive...although there is certainly a time and place to spend that kind of money, you can usually make a very similar look from off-the-shelf molding!

  • DIY Tip: Refinishing Floors

Make sure to use the right kind of sander when refinishing your floors! It takes a little bit of practice, but a large belt sander works much better than a random orbital!
